<p>Seemingly random shapes and forms found in nature often appear haphazard. But upon closure inspection, there is a structure underlying these natural arrangements. And as we look closer and closer, the patterns repeat over and over. These are fractals.</p>
<p>In basing design on the stress-reductive quality found in fractals, the transdisciplinary design team of 13&9 Design, Fractals Research, and Mohawk Group are tapping into our deep-seated desire to see patterns, to connect to nature and to have more inspiring and relaxing environments in which we live and work. </p>

<p>Fractals are the building blocks of many of nature’s patterns and have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and so provide benefits to physical health. This visual language is the basis for Relaxing Floors, a modular system designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group. Relaxing Floors is the culmination of art, science and human-centered design based on fractal patterns. Utilising fractals gives our eyes a break from the digital world and delivers the essence of nature to the contract build environment.</p>

Josh being a Yorta Yorta man raised in Morwell, VIC on Gunai Kurnai Country himself, wanted to create a business that celebrated the Indigenous culture through flooring while engaging with other Indigenous businesses, helping to streamline income back into Indigenous communities.</p>

<p>For generations, Indigenous people have shared culture through stories and artwork. At Dreamtime Flooring, Indigenous heritage is drawn from to celebrate this rich culture through the flooring medium in the hopes of preserving those stories for our future generations. </p>

<p>Dreamtime's mission is to have as many buildings as possible for current and future generations to see Aboriginal ancestry and culture with a particular focus on public buildings: Government, council, schools, libraries and galleries. <p>This concept is illustrative of The Visual Age, where there is visual literacy and creative democracy for all, and we have become fluent in the elements of graphics, photography, design, and art. <p>Biophilic design aims to enhance humankind’s innate biological connection with nature, bringing natural elements into interior spaces and mimicking natural patterns. This new collection concentrates on mimicking the growth patterns of real lichens on stone and tree bark, incorporating colours that takes us on a visual journey through the forest, from the floor into the trees with the new warm, bark-grey background and soft, more muted highlights. In the heart of Melbourne, a new community space has emerged as part of the Victorian State Government Living Libraries Infrastructure Program—the Narrm Ngarrgu Library.

The recently constructed Novotel is a premium 4-star hotel situated in the heart of Devonport Tasmania and features 187 guest rooms with stunning city, park, and water views. The hotel boasts a cutting-edge design crafted by the renowned Singapore-based design studio, Kreate. Our in-house design team were able to bring Kreate’s deign brief to life using our Designer Jet® custom carpet technology to provide a unique flooring solution that perfectly complements the various finishes in each space. 

Novotel Devonport

Collaborating closely with Wilson & Hill Architects, GH Commercial embarked on a quest to select flooring that would not only meet the rigorous demands of a healthcare facility but also contribute to a positive atmosphere, promoting well-being among patients. The choice fell upon Mohawk's Art Style collection, specifically the Disruptive Path carpet planks. Designed to infuse common areas with a blend of tranquility and vibrant energy, these flooring elements represent Mohawk's belief in the transformative power of design.

Waitaha Canterbury Cancer Centre 

GH Commercial partnered with local design firm A Plus Design to enhance the village's spaces through flooring. Specifically, for the fireside lounge — a haven where residents gather for relaxation and conversation — GH Commercial collaborated closely with Mohawk Group in the USA. Together, they crafted a custom textured patterned loop carpet tile, aligning seamlessly with the client's vision. The goal was to evoke a textured, homey ambiance with a heathered, multi-coloured appearance while ensuring exceptional durability and resistance to fading due to the high foot traffic and expansive windows in the area. The incorporation of Duracolor® premium nylon guarantees a carpet that resists permanent stains. This modular solution not only simplifies maintenance but also radiates a cosy residential charm, perfectly complementing the inviting atmosphere of the lounge.

Arrowtown Lifestyle Retirement Village

Over the last six years, Geelong Art Centre has undergone a multi-staged large-scale redevelopment, now making it the largest dedicated regional arts centre in Australia. Each of the building’s four levels evokes a different Wadawurrung narrative, with Ochre Country expressed at ground level, ascending to Moonah Forest Country, Sky Country and Night Sky Country. We are proud to have been a part of this participatory design process where our design and technical teams have worked with the Geelong Arts Centre project teams to deliver a range of custom Designer Jet® carpets that speaks to the traditional stories.

TWOA Centre - Auckland

This brand-new venue boasts large sports viewing screens, a mega bar and four event spaces, perfect for family and friends to come together to enjoy an American sports culture environment. This new Varsity location required a flooring finish that complemented the American sports themed interiors and menu. Our Artisan woven carpet in colour 34 Tartan Bells provided the perfect match that coincided with the brand colours of Varsity. The Kingsway Bar & Bistro were looking to refresh the interiors of their family owned and operated venue. Our Owls collection from our Mohawk Group brand was selected due to its unique appearance and lighter colour palette which assisted in lightening the dining spaces within the venue.

Designing the interior of The Meat & Wine Co.’s latest venue in Sydney’s CBD, the COOOP design team required a bespoke carpet design that embodied the traditional cultural design elements within the venue. Utilising our Designer Jet® technology, a gold and charcoal abstract carpet was created to perfectly match the wallpaper that is applied to the roof to create a mirrored effect that is the centre piece of the design.

Designed by award winning architects Cottee Parker, the overall contemporary design features a wide range of mixed prints that are reflected in the carpet. Each space is perfectly styled to match the carpet, with a unique design incorporated to meet the specific elements of each area.

Five years in the making, the Pullman Sydney Penrith has opened its doors, offering prestige luxury to its guests. A range of custom bespoke carpets provide opulent flooring that reflected the cultural inspiration of the project. Broadloom and carpet tile products were selected to meet the specific purpose and design element of each unique space.
