<p>Seemingly random shapes and forms found in nature often appear haphazard. But upon closure inspection, there is a structure underlying these natural arrangements. And as we look closer and closer, the patterns repeat over and over. These are fractals.</p>
<p>In basing design on the stress-reductive quality found in fractals, the transdisciplinary design team of 13&9 Design, Fractals Research, and Mohawk Group are tapping into our deep-seated desire to see patterns, to connect to nature and to have more inspiring and relaxing environments in which we live and work. </p>

<p>Fractals are the building blocks of many of nature’s patterns and have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and so provide benefits to physical health. This visual language is the basis for Relaxing Floors, a modular system designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group. Relaxing Floors is the culmination of art, science and human-centered design based on fractal patterns. Utilising fractals gives our eyes a break from the digital world and delivers the essence of nature to the contract build environment.</p>

<p>Owls have captured the imagination for centuries. Designed by Jason F. McLennan in collaboration with Mohawk Group, the Owls Collection captures the essence of these birds of prey through colour and patterning. Inspired by their plumage, mottled shades of black, brown, tan and grey take flight as distinctive, yet versatile commercial carpet planks across two patterns - Feather and Flight. A stylised visual and simple texture create intriguing, coordinating combinations. </p>

<p>Our ongoing quest for sustainable innovation delivers Nutopia 2.0, an expansion of the award-winning carpet plank system inspired by the urban fabric of our lives.</p>

Our Pattern Perfect precision tufting platform brings to life three new styles that double down on a commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.</p>

Urban Fringe II, Urban Passage II, and Urban Field II’s progressive colour composition works together as a dynamic system or separately, depending on the desired configuration, end-use and budget. Due to its unique construction and texture, Urban Canvas installs separately, ideally suited for large, open spaces.</p>

<p>Colour is like music: it carries you into a different frame of mind, sparking new emotions and inspiring deeper connections to your world. Chromatic Cadence is inspired by the work of artist Yvette and her use of music as a starting point for her expressive, colour-filled paintings.</br>

<p>Art, in any form, has the power to advance human connection in an increasingly fragmented world. As a universal language and change agent, art intervenes to inspire, heal and unite. Mohawk Group celebrates the interconnectivity of artistic form and expression with an imaginative collection of products with universal appeal. Representing a truly global product launch, the patterns, textures and colours originate from unexpected art interventions. <p>Change your perspective with Visual Edge, a new take on a hierarchy and structure that creates a flowing graphic pattern derived from nature.</p>
<p>This biophilic hexagonal design comes in two plank styles that layer elements and change scale to guide you through space, similarly to a bird's eye view of the ground below. </p>
<p>Patterns in a space can shrink or grown in scale to adjust to the changing formats of space in the built environment. </p>

Visual Edge

<p>Optic Reset is a modular carpet collection that consists of two mid-scale Field of View patterns, and coordinating texture – Shifted Focus, both of which have been created using elements from photography, illustration, and graphic design. Using positive and negative space, creating tonal shifts, and pushing boundaries of abstracted subject matter, Optic Reset allows you to create your own visual narratives with dual styles in shifting colourways of light and dark. The visuals give us cues for our other senses, and they are how we understand the world. And with Optic Reset, interior space can be created with subtle or dramatic views on the floor.</p>

<p>This concept is illustrative of The Visual Age, where there is visual literacy and creative democracy for all, and we have become fluent in the elements of graphics, photography, design, and art. Social media especially has influenced this, allowing for self-expression and creativity to come together to unite us with a sense of purpose on our collective path.</p>

<h2>Lichen Community, inspired by multi-hued, multi-textured lichens.</h2>
<p>Meet Lichen Community, designed in collaboration with McLennan Design, a modular carpet collection that connects us to a more restorative future. Inspired by expansive communities of lichens that grow together on bark and rock formations, playing a role in our ecosystems, the Lichen Community collection has been designed to provide a refined solution for creating collaborative environments, bringing people together. Rooted in the concept of symbiosis, Lichen Community defines communal spaces through colour and texture. This fresh take on the original Lichen collection offers an additional bark texture to join the popular stone base, serving as ground textures for the multi-hued lichens that grow together in place.</p>


<h2>Biophilic design, locally made</h2>
<p>Biophilic design aims to enhance humankind’s innate biological connection with nature, bringing natural elements into interior spaces and mimicking natural patterns. This new collection concentrates on mimicking the growth patterns of real lichens on stone and tree bark, incorporating colours that takes us on a visual journey through the forest, from the floor into the trees with the new warm, bark-grey background and soft, more muted highlights. Drawing from the natural world allows us to create spaces a little more connected to our roots, which can have a profound impact the health and wellbeing of building occupants.</p>

<p>One of the key features of Lichen Community is its biophilic three-plank system which allows for wayfinding and the creation of unique large-scale installations. By setting the more visually active Macro Bloom II style in a field of the Stone Community of Bark Community style, transitioning between them with Micro Bloom II, resulting in an organic, seamless installation. All four styles can be also used on their own or combined as desired, delivering an infinite variety of organic floorscapes to support biophilic space design. </p>
