UTAS Medical Science 1 Building
The University of Tasmania’s (UTAS) new Medical Science 1 Building, designed by Lyons Architects, is defined by unique architectural elements, which are reflected both internally and externally.
“The building brings together the School of Medicine and the Menzies Research Institute in a co-location. The organic nature, cellular window arrangement and curvilinear form of MS1 references the building’s medical research and training function, as well as reflecting the surrounding mountains and Derwent River.” - Adrian Stanic, Director, Lyons Architects.
The external façade of concrete and steel, flowing arches and slanted windows is complemented on the interior finishes by the strong abstract nature of the custom designed GH Commercial carpet tiles. The blue of the Derwent River and jagged peaks of the mountain ranges were integrated to form strong lineal waves on the floor.
In keeping with sustainable design practices Green Star 5 Star was used as a reference to establish the extensive environmental strategies for the building. All GH Commercial carpet tiles products, standard ranges or custom designs achieve Green Star maximum 100% points (5 Credits) on the MAT-2 Flooring calculator.
