In 2017, Melbourne welcomed its first vertical school opposite the iconic Flagstaff Gardens. This building marks the fifth campus for one of Melbourne’s top private schools, Haileybury, who already have a strong presence in Melbourne’s south east. This ten-storey campus welcomed over 230 students, providing parents working in the city access to Haileybury’s leading academic program for their children.
This stunning new campus was architecturally designed by Darren Carnell Architects. The impressive fit-out includes an indoor sporting facility, a contemporary floor dedicated to music, art dance and drama, two outdoor terrace gardens and six advanced science labs.
Part of this grand design encompassed Haileybury’s corporate colours by choosing a vibrant magenta carpet tile throughout various areas of the school, including their collaborative learning spaces. This solid pop of magenta on the floor was blended with Hyper Earth, a grey base tile featuring highlights of magenta and Drifted Ground, a mixed grey tile to help balance the design. The section of these three ranges made for a seamless transition across the floor and provided a unique installation design around the campus.
Flooring can significantly impact the overall environment and is often the largest surface area to consider when designing an educational space. Providing colour in a learning environment stimulates the senses and encourages creativity in the classroom often leading to a better educational environment for students and staff. Colour is not the only factor that can contribute to an improved learning space, sound is also a big concern. Students can regularly get distracted from their learning due to noise. It is also difficult for teachers to educate when they are faced with these challenges. Carpet is the perfect choice to help eliminate a large amount of noise created in these spaces.
We hope students and staff enjoy their new facility and we are proud to have been involved in this project.
