Our Australian history spans back to 1865, when the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company began operations in Geelong and was purchased in the 1890’s by Godfrey Hirst. Godfrey Hirst’s entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of the industry lead to the great success that was furthered even more so by the McKendrick family in the 1960s. In 2018, the Godfrey Hirst business was acquired by Mohawk Industries, the world’s largest flooring company, expanding its product offering and capabilities to a global scale.

Godfrey Hirst Australia has achieved Climate Active Carbon Neutral organisation status and are proud to be the first Australian carpet manufacturer to do so. Furthermore, Godfrey Hirst New Zealand is also now a carbon neutral organisation.1

<h3>We Have Something Exciting to Declare.</h3>

In a marketplace increasingly focused on environmental considerations and issues around sustainability, Godfrey Hirst are incredibly proud to have products officially approved Declare® LBC Red List Free.

The International Living Future Institute (ILFI), and local affiliate the Living Future Institute of Australia (LFIA), are organisations committed to driving sustainable change in the Australian Built environment through the development of leading edge programs, that are designed to radically change our approach to building and construction.

Predicated on creating a healthier built environment, the Declare® program delivers clear, unambiguous information about building material specifications. Participating manufacturers are required to disclose a Product’s entire constituent chemical composition to a threshold of 100-parts-per-million; essentially creating a ‘nutrition’ label of ingredients.

<h3>A product transparency program</h3>

Each Declare® label is compared against a list of worst-inclass materials, better known as the Red List. Chemicals on the Red List can pose an increased risk of:

<ul>
	<li>Polluting the environment</li>
	<li>Bio-accumulation of contaminants progressing up the food chain</li>
	<li>Negative health implications for factory personnel, construction industry workers and building occupants</li>
</ul>

Aware of our role in developing products that homeowners can comfortably put in their homes, we worked with our entire supply chain to identify, source and utilise the healthiest possible manufacturing ingredients. When we were confident our products met the stringent sustainability and toxic free chemical standards, we applied for LFIA Declare® approval.

<h3>The Declare® initiative has three declaration statuses:</h3>

	<li>LBC Red List Free - Complete ingredient disclosure revealing ZERO Red List chemicals</li>
	<li>LBC Red List Approved - Where chemicals or product ingredients have no available public information, or a manufacturer is unable to publicly identify an ingredient due to proprietary registration. Products may potentially contain Red List chemicals, which, if identified, will be highlighted in orange</li>
	<li>Declared - This base level of transparency, while revealing a product’s ingredients, will nevertheless contain some Red List ingredients, which will also be highlighted in orange</li>
</ul>

<h3>This label addresses three key concerns:</h3>

	<li>What is it made of?</li>
	<li>Where does it end up at the end of its life?</li>

Our most popular carpets and hard flooring, the Mid-range carpet and hard flooring category offers all-around performance with excellent comfort, design and features, including stain resistant carpet, wear resistant carpet, soil resistance carpet and fade resistant carpet that’s often Australian made, New Zealand made and designed for local conditions. 
Mid-range hard flooring options include extra scratch resistant flooring, dent resistant flooring, engineered flooring that looks just like real timber, water resistant flooring and more. Mid priced carpets and hard floors are most often used to add value to owner-occupied homes and higher-end investment properties. They really hit the sweet spot for designer carpet boasting some of the best features, with incredible value.

Mid Range

Declare 

Selecting an affordable carpet is so much more than just buying cheap carpet. Products in the affordable carpet and hard flooring category are entry level and of the latest flooring designs and value for any home. These low cost carpets and hard floors may be lighter on your pocket, but still provide good durability and overall quality.
Affordable carpets and floors are often used for the budget conscious renovator, investment properties or any space that where a low-cost flooring option is needed.

An extension of the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS), the Environmental Certification Scheme tests carpet to ensure they meet stringent environmental performance standards such as volatile organic compound emissions, noise reduction and thermal insulation properties (For more information visit: <a href="https://www.carpetinstitute.com.au/environmental/">www.carpetinstitute.com.au/environmental/</a>)

As a prerequisite for the ECS program, carpet manufacturers must comply with the Code of Practice for Environmental Management (including performance criteria for raw materials, the manufacturing process, the carpet during its use and at the end of its life).

ECS Level 4+ is the highest standard within the ECS program. This stringent program is a Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) approved third party, with Green Star Level 4 certification providing at least a minimum of 12 Green Star points.
