The first manufacturer to achieve ECS Level 4+ across our carpet portfolio and today, with 248 certified products, we remain the leader.

At Godfrey Hirst, sustainability is at the core of what we do. That’s why we were the first manufacturer in Australia to achieve ECS Level 4+ across our entire carpet portfolio and we’re still leading the market today – with 248 certified ECS Level 4+ products and counting.

What is ECS?

Administered by the Carpet Institute of Australia, ECS rates the environmental impact of flooring across its entire lifecycle – from raw materials through to end-of-life. Products are assessed on greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency and waste reduction.

Why it matters:

  • Top certification: ECS Level 4+ is Australia’s highest environmental standard for carpet.
  • Proven impact: Recognises reductions in energy, water, waste and carbon emissions.
  • Ethical focus: Includes modern slavery reporting and responsible sourcing.
  • Green building ready: Supports Green Star, WELL and LEED credits with up to 22 Responsible Product Value points.
  • Trusted by specifiers: Backed by the Carpet Institute to meet growing sustainability demands.

Industry Insight with Andrew Martin, Director of the Carpet Institute of Australia

As part of our commitment to education, we recently commissioned Architecture & Design to explore the impact of ECS certification on sustainable flooring. In the feature, Andrew Martin, Director of the Carpet Institute of Australia, explains:

“The ECS program has raised the bar for our members so that their products achieve ‘Best Practice’ under the Responsible Products framework. They are demanding more sustainable products at the design stage… we have positioned our licensees to take full advantage of this requirement.”

This independent perspective reinforces why choosing ECS Level 4+ certified flooring is such a powerful step towards a more sustainable built environment.
