Project Overview:

Following extensive restoration works, the Norfolk Chapel at Karrakatta has been carefully revitalised to once again serve as a place of reflection, remembrance and community connection. After sustaining significant damage in October 2024, the project called for a considered interior response that would restore dignity and comfort to this much-loved chapel, while respecting its cultural and emotional significance.

The interior renewal was delivered in close collaboration with the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board, with flooring selections made in-house by the client team to support the chapel’s renewed purpose. Dreamtime Flooring’s Sacred Stories & Sand Symbols collection was selected to bring warmth, meaning and subtle visual depth to the chapel interior.

A Palette Drawn from Country

Inspired by Country, culture and storytelling, Sacred Stories and Sand Symbols offers a thoughtful approach to commercial flooring, where design extends beyond aesthetics to convey narrative and purpose. The selected palette of Sacred Stories - 970 Emerald and Sand Symbols - 970 Kelp introduces layered greens that reference the natural landscape, evoking a sense of renewal, balance and tranquility.

The tonal variation and organic patterning of the collection add softness underfoot, helping to create a welcoming and contemplative atmosphere appropriate for the chapel setting.

Material with Meaning

The use of Sacred Stories within the Norfolk Chapel enhances the interior through:

  • A calming, nature-inspired colour palette
  • Subtle patterning that adds texture without distraction
  • A durable, commercial-grade flooring solution suited to public spaces

As part of the Dreamtime Flooring range, the product also supports meaningful design outcomes through collaboration with First Nations culture and storytelling.

A Space Renewed

Now reopened, the Norfolk Chapel offers a dignified and serene environment that honours both its history and its role within the community. Through considered material selection and thoughtful design, the flooring contributes to a sense of warmth, continuity and quiet reflection - supporting the chapel as a beautiful and welcoming space for services and remembrance once again.
